Guillain Barre Syndrome(GBS)
GBS is a typical motor neuron disease of the lower motor neurons It's a self-limited auto-immune illness in which the body's immune system erroneously targets a component of the peripheral nervous system, resulting in symptoms ranging from moderate acute widespread weakness to catastrophic paralysis, leaving the person unable to breathe on their own.
Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a rare, rapidly progressive condition caused by nerve inflammation (polyneuritis), which causes muscle weakness and eventually paralysis.
Because it encompasses a wide range of demyelinating inflammatory poly radicular-neuropathies, it's referred to as a syndrome.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT
FORMS OF GBS:
GBS has four different types:
● AIDP- Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, affecting the myelin mostly. In America and Europe, this is the most prevalent variant.
● AMAN-Acute motor axonal neuropathy affects the nerves' axons that travel to the muscles. In certain Asian countries, this is the most prevalent type.
● AMSAN-Acute motor and sensory axonal neuropathy in which the motor and sensory neurons' axons are affected.
● MFS-Miller Fisher syndrome is characterized by paralysis that begins in the eyes. An unsteady gait is also linked to MFS. MFS is less frequent in the United States than it is in Asia.
Except for the absence of sensory symptoms and signs in acute motor axonal neuropathy, the distinct kinds have similar symptoms, signs, and disease histories. Nerve conduction tests are used to differentiate them.
Is GBS widespread?
GBS is a very uncommon infection. Only 3,000 to 6,000 people in the United States contract GBS each year, according to the CDC.
WHAT SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
OF GBS ARE OBSERVED AND SEEN?
The sign and symptoms of Guillain Barre syndrome can be experienced by the person within the first two weeks and weakness begins after two weeks of symptoms.
Guillain-Barre syndrome can cause the following signs and symptoms:
● Pins and needles, prickling tingling or numbness in your fingers, toes, ankles, or wrists
● Leg weakness that has migrated to your upper body
● Inability to walk or climb stairs because of unsteady walking
● Face movements, such as speaking, chewing, or swallowing, are difficult.
● Inability to move your eyes or double vision
● Severe pain that can be achy, shooting or cramping in nature, and that gets worse at night
● Having trouble controlling your bladder or bowels
● Heart rate is quite fast
● Blood pressure can be low or high.
● Breathing problems
Tingling and weakness in the feet and legs are common symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome, which can spread to the upper body and arms. Symptoms in the arms or face appear in roughly 10% of patients with the disease. Muscle weakness can turn into paralysis as Guillain-Barre disease progresses.
WHAT TRIGGERS
GUILLAIN-BARRE'S SYNDROME:
● Influenza virus
● Cytomegalovirus
● Zika virus
● Hepatitis A, B, C, and E
● HIV
● Mycoplasma pneumonia
● Surgery
● Trauma
● Rarely, influenza vaccinations or childhood
WHAT CAUSES GBS?
1.
Diarrhea or respiratory infection:
About two-thirds of GBS patients had diarrhea or a respiratory ailment many weeks before exhibiting symptoms.
2.
Viral infection:
Infections with cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, Zika virus, or other viruses were found in some persons with GBS.
3.
Vaccination:
Very few persons have developed GBS after receiving particular immunizations in the days or weeks following their administration. The benefits of vaccination, on the other hand, significantly outweigh the hazards. People who have the flu, for example, have a higher risk of contracting GBS than those who get vaccinated against the flu, according to research.
Treatment :
1. Exchanging plasma (a procedure that removes and replaces the liquid part of the blood)
2. Immunoglobulin infusions at high doses (an infusion of antibodies)
