Hello, world!

WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS?

Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine that most commonly affects teenagers. Scoliosis can develop in adults who have cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy, although the origin of most childhood scoliosis is unknown. Scoliosis is usually moderate, but certain curvatures increase as children grow older.

Scoliosis is categorized into four types i.e., Idiopathic scoliosis, congenital scoliosis, neuromuscular scoliosis, and degenerative scoliosis. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most prevalent kind among them.

CAUSES OF SCOLIOSIS

This is a chronic condition that is extremely common in India, with more than 10 million cases per year. Following are the underlying causes of scoliosis

  • Due to cerebral palsy
  • Due to muscular dystrophy
  • Due to some infections
  • Due to some tumors
  • Due to some genetic disorders

This is most common in children between the ages of 10 and 15. Girls, in comparison to boys, are more vulnerable. The more curved the spine is, the worse it will become with time.

SYMPTOMS

Following are the symptoms of scoliosis:

  • Shoulders, waist, and hips are misaligned.
  • One-shoulder blade appears to be larger than the others.
  • When leaning forward, there is a protrusion on one side of the back.

TREATMENTS

As previously stated, this is a chronic illness for which no permanent remedy has yet been found. Its symptoms can be minimized, but they cannot be cured.

There are three different types of treatments that can be used. The following are some examples:

  • Back brace- This is a back support and restoration device. It can be used to rectify an abnormal curvature of the spine in some circumstances.
  • Surgery- There are two types of operations that can be performed in this procedure. One is bone grafting, which involves the placement of fresh bones around a fracture to aid healing. The second procedure is spinal fusion, which involves joining two or more spines together to limit mobility between them.
  • Exercises- Physical exercises are included in this. Stretching activities can help you become more flexible and improve your physical performance.

HOW PHYSIOTHERAPY CAN HELP IN AVOIDING SCOLIOSIS MEDICINES AND HELP IN CURE?

Physiotherapy offers a variety of exercises that might help to alleviate scoliosis symptoms. Regular exercise can help prevent this condition from worsening. Medicines contain a number of adverse effects, and they aren't always reversible. Physical deformities can be treated with physiotherapy.
